• Try booking mid-week tickets. Flights are often cheaper early in the morning (between 2 am and 6 am).

• Travel off-season to save significant money on airfare and accommodation.

• Be flexible with your exact dates and choose a travel window that aligns with the best deals.

 2. Use Flight Search Tools (Not Just Google Flights)

You’ll often hear people say to check Google Flights first, but I don’t think it’s the best option. Every time I use it, the prices are higher than what I find on Skyscanner, Momondo, or Kiwi. Those sites usually give me better deals.

• Once you find a good price, check the airline’s website directly as well. Sometimes, you can get even better prices by booking with them.
• Always search in an incognito window. This makes sure you see the best prices. If you don’t, prices can go up if you keep looking at the same page.
  
  
• If you’re planning multiple trips, try buying one-way tickets instead of round-trip ones. I saved about $700 on a trip to Asia by doing this.

And if you’re flexible with dates, set up a price alert. You’ll get notified when prices drop, which makes booking easier. It’s a smart way to learn how to travel cheaply and explore new places.

Just type “Everywhere” in the Skyscanner search box, and it will show you a list of destinations with prices for different months. You can easily pick the cheapest or most interesting option for your next trip.

Try to travel light to avoid the cost of checked baggage fees, or even carry-on fees in some cases. If you can fit everything into a backpack, that’s the perfect solution.

Here are a few clever packing hacks I’ve personally used:

• The Spare Bag Trick: When I traveled with just light baggage, I brought an extra foldable bag with me (I packed it in my backpack). I wore extra clothes before boarding, and once I was on the plane, I tucked them into the spare bag. This saved space while still allowing me to bring everything I needed!

• The Jacket Pocket Strategy: I recently learned a clever trick: when traveling with a jacket, stuff the pockets with extra items. It works great! I even managed to hide shoes in each sleeve once.

• WWOOF: Offers free stays in exchange for volunteer work on organic farms (provides room and board).
• Facebook group called ‘Host a Sister’ can help you connect with others and stay for free as well.

For years, my top recommendation was always the Chase Sapphire Preferred because the 25% boost in the travel portal made redemptions incredibly easy.

But recently, Chase changed the rules, and the portal isn’t always the best value anymore.

Now, the smarter strategy is to transfer your points directly to airline partners during bonus promo periods. 

For example:

• Virgin Atlantic frequently offers 20–40% extra miles when you transfer points.

• That means 10,000 Chase points can instantly turn into 12,000–14,000 Virgin points.

• These boosts can reduce the cost of award flights dramatically.
  
  

*Some people always refer to only using points to transfer for the best value, but for me, it depends. If I have a free flight through the Chase portal with my points, I am going to book it there directly.

Credit Card Churning. Churning involves applying for multiple cards to earn signup bonuses, then downgrading or canceling before annual fees apply. Be cautious, though: Banks track applications. Too many inquiries in a short period can harm your credit. Always meet the minimum spend requirements realistically. Don’t overspend just for points. If you check the Reddit channel, you can get a lot of info and read real-life examples.

I’m always on the lookout for the best deals, and I make sure to maximize my credit card points to fly for free or at a fraction of the cost. The most important tip is staying flexible with your dates. When you’re searching for cheap flights, whether international or domestic, flexibility often makes it much easier to find better deals.

Here are some key points to keep in mind:

• Avoid weekends and holidays: Flying on a Friday–Sunday or during high seasons and holidays usually costs much more. If possible, plan your trips mid-week.

**For example, I sometimes fly during the week, and a 2–3 day round-trip within the USA can cost $70–$100. Not bad, right? But if I flew over the weekend, the price could easily double or triple.

• Check early morning flights: Flights before 8 a.m. are often cheaper because fewer travelers want to wake up that early. Airlines sometimes lower prices for these times, so if you’re flexible, it’s worth checking.

• Fly off-season: Major festivals, concerts, and peak travel seasons can make flights expensive. Flying just a little earlier or later in the year can save a lot.

• Even one day matters: The difference of a single day can completely change flight prices. Being flexible with departure and return dates is key to getting the best deals.

2. Be Flexible With the Destinations

Looking for the best affordable flight booking tips? The best tip to find cheap tickets is just to look everywhere, especially if you do not know where you want to go. Skyscanner is the best site to do that. You simply need to specify the time frame you want to depart, like the exact days, or even better, just search for a whole month and use the “Everywhere” option to search for all tickets.

I love using the “Everywhere” search option, especially when I don’t know exactly where I want to go. It helps me make the right decision by easily comparing destinations and prices at the same time. This is also perfect for spontaneous, last-minute trips.

Sometimes, you might spot a great deal but feel unsure about going. But what if that trip turns out to be one of the best vacations of your life? That’s often how it works for me—spontaneous trips almost always end up being amazing.

3. Always Check Airline’s Websites Directly

Whenever I find a good deal on a third-party site, I always check the airline’s own website too. Finding cheap flights isn’t just about using comparison sites, as you might be missing out on extra savings if you skip this step.

Sometimes airlines offer lower prices or more flexible cancellation and change policies directly on their site. It never hurts to take a quick look and see if you can get a better deal.

4. Book With the Right Agency

Some third-party sites might show a cheap ticket, but then add extra fees at the end. For example, Justfly adds a booking fee you don’t see until the final price.

Some fees can’t be refunded, so it’s important to pick the right site from the start.

To find affordable flights, I usually check sites with flexible date options. I mostly use Skyscanner, but I also peek at a few other platforms just to make sure I’m getting the best deal.

Other sites I check are  Hopper, Expedia, and Kiwi. For example, Hopper can send you a notification if the price for a flight or hotel you were checking goes up or down.

5. Search Tickets With Layovers

Direct flights are usually more expensive than flights with layovers. Especially if you fly internationally. If you are flexible with your time, try to look for tickets with stopovers. It will save you money, and sometimes you can even see a new place while you have a long layover.

For example, I know if you are flying through Turkey, they usually have pretty long layovers, and if your layover is more than 6 hours, you can take a tour of the city, which they offer for free. Or if you book tickets directly on Icelandair, you can select a free stopover for 1, 2, 3 days, or longer. Not bad either.

Also, consider flying to nearby airports. I’ve done this a few times, and it’s often cheaper than flying directly to the main airport. Keep in mind that getting from one airport to another can take an hour or more, so leave extra time to avoid missing your flight. On the bright side, using layovers this way can add a little adventure without extra cost.

6. Buy Tickets Directly At the Airport

If you do not mind driving to the airport and waiting in line to buy tickets that way, just try it out. Buying tickets directly at the airport is a good idea if you do not want to pay extra fees. A good example is Spirit, where you can save around $23 or more per ticket.

The downside is that there are no guarantees that if you buy tickets directly with an agent, it will cost you less, as it depends on the destination and type of ticket. But if you are lucky, you will get a lower ticket price as you won’t have to pay those extra fees we get charged when we buy online.

7. Sign up For Newsletters

Ticket prices change constantly, and it’s impossible to check websites all day to see if prices have dropped. Signing up for a price alert through Hopper, Skyscanner, or Google Flights can save you time and help you snag the best deal. Newsletters from airlines or travel sites can also keep you updated on price changes and promotions.

8. Book Round-Trip Flights as Two One-Way Tickets

I used this trick for my flights to Asia, and it worked really well. I booked one ticket from Chicago to Singapore and another from Bangkok back to Chicago. The total cost was only $700 with the same airline, a perfect deal! If I had searched for a multi-destination ticket from Chicago → Singapore → Bangkok → Chicago, it would have been much more expensive.

It is not a surprise that paying for luggage can be very costly. Simple check-in luggage in the US costs between $25-$50 or even more. To avoid that extra charge, try to travel as light as possible with only your backpack, so you won’t have to check your luggage.

Or if you have to take bigger luggage, pay for it in advance online. If you skip that step, you will end up paying much more at the airport.
