Mammoth Cave National Park is a must-see if you love exploring caves. It’s about 1.5 hours from Louisville and 6 hours from Chicago. It’s the longest cave system in the world and very popular.

 

When I visited, I explored just one cave, but it was amazing. Some tunnels were so narrow we had to crawl through, and at one point the lights went out completely. It was scary but so much fun!

 

Tip: Book your tour online before you go. Last-minute tickets can mean long lines, and planning ahead lets you see more caves.

The state itself doesn’t sound like too much fun, at least to me,  but Cleveland is a nice place to go. I’ve been there in the early wintertime and still enjoyed it.

 

The most famous attraction is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They offer an impressive collection of memorable pieces, from John Lennon’s guitar to hip-hop pioneer Jam Master Jay’s gold chains. There is so much more to see.

17. Starved Rock State Park, IL

It is located just 80 miles from Chicago (~ 2h drive). Starved Rock State Park is on the Illinois River and is known for its deep canyons formed by glacial meltwater. Some of them even have waterfalls. The only downside is if you go at the wrong time, the canyons might be dry. My tip is to call ahead and check if the waterfalls are flowing; otherwise, it won’t be as exciting.

Shawnee National Forest can be easily described as terrain that spans woodlands, hills, and lakes. It is 337.4 miles from Chicago (~5h 7m drive). Great place for hiking and enjoying amazing views. Once you get there, you will be surrounded by natural beauty everywhere.
