<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-8397" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/20220529_102954-1024x1021-1-300x300.jpg" alt="london to oxford trip" width="800" height="798" / loading="lazy" srcset="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/20220529_102954-1024x1021-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/20220529_102954-1024x1021-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/20220529_102954-1024x1021-1-768x766.jpg 768w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/20220529_102954-1024x1021-1-45x45.jpg 45w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/20220529_102954-1024x1021-1.jpg 1024w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" />

Getting to Oxford from London is easy. The city is about 60 miles away, and you have several convenient transport options depending on your budget and schedule.

By Train (Best Option)

Taking the train is the fastest and most convenient way to reach Oxford.

Trains depart from London Paddington

Travel time is about 1–1.5 hours

Buying a round-trip ticket in advance is usually cheaper (expect around £30–35 return)

Good to know:
Train schedules can sometimes change or be replaced. If that happens, you may need to switch trains along the way. Always check that there are later trains available so you can easily catch the next one if needed.

Once you arrive, Oxford is very walkable. You can explore on your own or join a free walking tour. Everything is close together, so getting lost is unlikely; just follow the crowds.

By Bus

The bus is a budget-friendly alternative, especially if you’re traveling solo. It’s a good option if you want a relaxed ride without worrying about train changes.

Travel time: about 1.5 hours

Comfortable and easy, with frequent departures from London

By Taxi

A taxi is the most expensive option, but it can be worth it if you’re short on time.

Travel time: around 1.5 hours

Prices vary, so it’s worth comparing options (services like Minicabit can help)

By Car

Driving gives you flexibility to stop along the way, but it comes with drawbacks.

Parking in Oxford can be limited and confusing

You’ll need to pay attention to restricted zones and parking rules

For a day trip, public transport is usually easier than driving.

What to Know About Oxford

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-8396" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/20220529_105658-2-1024x1002-1-300x294.jpg" alt="day trip to Oxford from London" width="800" height="783" / loading="lazy" srcset="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/20220529_105658-2-1024x1002-1-300x294.jpg 300w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/20220529_105658-2-1024x1002-1-768x752.jpg 768w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/20220529_105658-2-1024x1002-1-45x45.jpg 45w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/20220529_105658-2-1024x1002-1.jpg 1024w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" />

Oxford is a historic city just west of London and is easy to reach by train, bus, or car, making it a perfect day trip from London.

The city is very walkable, so you won’t need to worry about getting around if you arrive by public transport.

Harry Potter was filmed in Oxford, including famous college locations—though access can be limited during private events.

Oxford is world-famous for its prestigious university and is ranked among the top ten safest student cities by the Complete University Guide.

You won’t get bored here—Oxford blends history, architecture, arts, science, and innovation all in one place.

You’ll find beautiful meadows, gardens, parks, riverside walks, and scenic countryside right next to the city.

The city also offers great shopping (like Westgate Oxford), cozy cafés, restaurants, and unique libraries.

Oxford is an easy city to explore on foot. Most popular sights, colleges, markets, and shops are close to each other in the city center, so you won’t need any transport for most of the day.

If you want to visit places outside the center, you can use local buses, which run often and are easy to use. Uber and taxis are also available and work well for short distances.

Many people in Oxford ride bikes, and the city is mostly flat, so cycling is another good option if you want to move a bit faster.

You don’t really need a car in Oxford. Parking can be difficult and expensive, and walking or using public transport is usually much easier.

1.Big Ben – London’s Most Iconic Landmark

Big Ben is undoubtedly one of the top places to see in London. How could you visit the city without seeing this iconic landmark? In case you’re not familiar, Big Ben refers to the Great Bell of the famous clock tower. While there’s a bit of mystery around its exact origin, one thing’s for sure: the time on Big Ben is always accurate.

So, if you happen to forget your watch and your phone isn’t working, this clock is the perfect place to check the time. Of course, for me, it was the first major sight I went to see. London just wouldn’t be the same without Big Ben!

2. Westminster Abbey – a Historic Must-see

Westminster Abbey is another iconic landmark in London, right next to Big Ben. This beautiful, historic royal church sits in the heart of the city, making it easy to walk to many nearby attractions.

Fun fact: there have been 17 royal weddings at the Abbey, including the famous wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. While you can buy tickets to explore the inside, the church’s exterior is just as stunning and perfect for snapping some memorable photos, saving both time and money.

3. The London Eye – Best City Views

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-5813" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_114435-2-1022x1024.jpg" alt="budget london trip " width="760" height="761" / loading="lazy" srcset="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_114435-2-1022x1024.jpg 1022w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_114435-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_114435-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_114435-2-768x769.jpg 768w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_114435-2-1533x1536.jpg 1533w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_114435-2-2044x2048.jpg 2044w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_114435-2-45x45.jpg 45w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px" />

If you’ve ridden a similar Ferris wheel in your country, the London Eye might not surprise you, but the long line next to it definitely will. When I walked by, the line was massive, and I’m sure people waited for hours to get on.

To avoid the wait, try visiting at a quieter time. The London Eye is a must-see if it’s your first time in London. It’s visible from nearly every corner of the city, making it a great landmark to spot. Plus, the area around the London Eye is full of places to hang out and grab a bite, so take your time exploring; you might find some hidden gems.

4. Tower Bridge – London’s Iconic Bridge<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-5815" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_101546-2-966x1024.jpg" alt="cheap london" width="760" height="806" / loading="lazy" srcset="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_101546-2-966x1024.jpg 966w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_101546-2-283x300.jpg 283w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_101546-2-768x815.jpg 768w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_101546-2-1448x1536.jpg 1448w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_101546-2-1931x2048.jpg 1931w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px" />

Tower Bridge is one of the most iconic and beautiful bridges in London, and it’s difficult to capture its full beauty through pictures alone; you need to see it in person. The walk along the high level offers breathtaking views of the city. On the other side of the bridge, you’ll find a restaurant perfect for a romantic dinner or simply enjoying a meal on your own.

5. Trafalgar Square – the Heart of Central London<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-5817" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_121522-2-1024x687.jpg" alt="london cheap" width="760" height="510" / loading="lazy" srcset="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_121522-2-1024x687.jpg 1024w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_121522-2-300x201.jpg 300w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_121522-2-768x515.jpg 768w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_121522-2-1536x1030.jpg 1536w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_121522-2-2048x1373.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px" />

Trafalgar Square is a lively public square right in the heart of the city, surrounded by three roads and just a short walk from Big Ben and other landmarks. It’s a major traffic hub, but on a warm day, it’s the perfect spot to sit on a bench, relax, and enjoy the atmosphere.

You can catch performances, take great photos, or simply people-watch. If you love books, there’s a charming bookstore across the street with a cozy café on the second floor, perfect for a quiet break.

6. Picadilly Circus – London’s Busiest Meeting Point<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-5825" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/pexels-irina-aksenova-3385207-1-1024x683.jpg" alt="cheap london travel" width="760" height="507" / loading="lazy" srcset="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/pexels-irina-aksenova-3385207-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/pexels-irina-aksenova-3385207-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/pexels-irina-aksenova-3385207-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/pexels-irina-aksenova-3385207-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/pexels-irina-aksenova-3385207-1-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px" />

This is the busiest meeting point in London, known for the famous statue of Eros, neon signs, and large displays. Located at the junction of five major streets, it’s just a short walk from shops, restaurants, and more. So, don’t be surprised by the crowds and pigeons! While London offers many quieter, amazing spots, this area is always buzzing with people.

7. Ride the Famous Double-Decker Red Bus

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-5804" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_105620-1-1024x983.jpg" alt="cheap trip to london" width="760" height="729" / loading="lazy" srcset="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_105620-1-1024x983.jpg 1024w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_105620-1-300x288.jpg 300w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_105620-1-768x737.jpg 768w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_105620-1-1536x1474.jpg 1536w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/20220527_105620-1-2048x1965.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px" />
The red bus, London

You might find it a little silly, but I’ve wanted to ride a double-decker red bus in London since I was a child. I’m not sure why, but it always fascinated me. Well, I finally did it, and it was so much fun!

This experience is a must-do when you’re in London, and it’s a great way to see the city. The payment system is super easy. No need to worry about a transit card. You can simply tap your contactless credit card, and you’re all set. I rode it in the morning when it was less crowded, sitting on the top floor by the window, watching the city unfold below.

I didn’t have a specific route in mind, so I stayed on until it was time to hop off, but it was still such a fun experience. Highly recommend it!

8. Buckingham Palace – a Royal Highlight

Buckingham Palace is one of those places you can’t miss when visiting London. It’s a symbol of British royalty and a really impressive sight. I had to see it for myself!

Whether you’re there to watch the Changing of the Guard or just admire the palace from the outside, it’s a place that shows British tradition. I didn’t take a full tour, but just seeing the palace and soaking in the atmosphere was enough to appreciate its importance. It’s another must-see when you’re in London!

Shopping in central London is a must if you’re visiting. You’ll find plenty of European brands like Bershka, Pull and Bear, and Stradivarius, so there’s something for everyone. Even though London has a reputation for being expensive, I was surprised by how good some deals were. I even found two pairs of designer jeans at TK Maxx for just $50—it was such a steal! If you’re after even more cheap London shopping options, Primark is worth a stop too.

If you have some extra time in London, take a day trip to a nearby city—you won’t regret it!

One great option is Oxford, which is just a short train ride away. To get there, head to Paddington Station and catch a train that will take around 1 hour and 25 minutes.

Note: Trains can sometimes be canceled or replaced, so if that happens, you’ll need to switch. A good backup plan is to take a train from Paddington to Reading and then transfer to Oxford. It’s a good idea to check for other trains after yours in case of any changes. Also, buying a return ticket right away will save you money. I paid £32.90 for the round trip.

Oxford is a walkable city, and you can easily explore it on your own or join a free walking tour. If you’re not sure where to go, just follow the crowd—there are plenty of tourists around!

London Travel Tips

Take Advantage of Free Museums and Attractions: London has many free museums and galleries, like the British Museum, the Tate Modern, and the National Gallery. London’s cheap experiences like the British Museum or the National Gallery are a must-visit without spending any money.

Check for Discounts and Deals: Many popular attractions, like the London Eye or West End shows, offer discounts when you book online in advance. Always check for discounts to save on tickets.

Travel Off-Peak: Try to avoid traveling on the Tube during rush hours (7:30-9:30 am and 5-7 pm). Traveling during off-peak times will save you from crowded conditions and also save you money, as fares are lower.

Dine Smart: While dining out is part of the London experience, look for local spots or pub meals to save money compared to pricier restaurants. Avoid dining near major tourist attractions, as those areas tend to be more expensive.

Stay in Budget Accommodation: Look for hostels or budget hotels with good locations but lower prices. Many hostels in London have great amenities and are within walking distance of major sights.

Use Apps for Navigation: Download apps like Citymapper or Google Maps to easily navigate London’s public transport system and find cheaper routes.

Enjoy Free Parks: Take a break from sightseeing by visiting one of London’s many beautiful parks, like Hyde Park or Regent’s Park. These parks are free to enter and offer peaceful spots for a picnic or relaxing walk.

Keep an Eye on Your Belongings: Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like Oxford Street or tourist attractions. Pickpockets are active in busy spots, so keep your belongings secure.

Tipping in London: Tipping is common but not obligatory. A service charge is often included in the bill, especially at restaurants. If it’s not, it’s customary to leave a tip of around 10-15%. In cafes and casual spots, rounding up your bill or leaving a small tip is also appreciated.
