Paris is full of culture, charm, and unforgettable experiences, but three days is not a lot of time! To help you make the most of your visit, I’ve put together a perfect 3-day Paris itinerary so you can see the highlights, enjoy the city, and make lasting memories.

Day 1

Visit the Eiffel Tower

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/thumbnail-26-624x1024.jpeg" alt="Paris travel tips for first-timers" width="440" height="722" / loading="lazy">
The Eiffel Tower

Start your 3-day Paris itinerary in the heart of the city with its most iconic landmarks. Day 1 is all about the must-see spots, beginning with the Eiffel Tower. Whether you go up for the panoramic views or admire it from below, this iconic landmark is impossible to miss.

Tips for Visiting the Eiffel Tower:

Go early to avoid crowds and get better photos.

Buy your tickets online in advance for faster access. Prices vary depending on the type of ticket, so check the options here.

Arrive on time. If you’re more than 30 minutes late for a timed ticket, you may be denied entry.

Planning to eat at the restaurant on top? Make a reservation in advance.

Expect some wait times for the elevators, or skip them and climb the stairs for a unique view of Paris along the way.

Don’t miss the Eiffel Tower at night. It puts on a magical light show! The sparkling display starts around 9 PM when it gets dark and continues until 1 AM, with a 5-minute show every hour. The final show lasts a little longer.

For the best view, head to the riverside along the Seine. You can see the tower twinkle from almost anywhere along the river, and it’s truly spectacular. Just keep in mind that it can get crowded, so plan ahead if you want the perfect spot.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="http://www.mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/thumbnail-25.jpeg" alt="budget travel in Paris for 3 days" width="440" height="925" / loading="lazy">
The Eiffel Tower at night

Take a Break at Park Du Champ

The Eiffel Tower is just a short walk from Parc du Champ, a peaceful park where you can take a break and enjoy some quiet time—about 5–10 minutes on foot. Afterwards, you can head to the nearby Seine River for a scenic cruise, only about a 15-minute walk from the tower.

Try the Best Chocolate Croissant and Other Desserts

The selection of desserts in Paris is huge. From my experience, it was so hard to find a chocolate croissant (weird, right?!) in any cafe or restaurant I visited.

I finally found it in one of the restaurants, but it did not impress me with its freshness and taste at all. The place was good itself, but the croissant was just ok. As I discovered later, the best croissants and other pastries can be found in the local pastry shops. In your search for the best pastries, make sure to visit smaller, less touristy bakeries for authentic flavors.

Take a Seine River Cruise

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="http://www.mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/thumbnail-19-1-687x1024.jpeg" alt="hidden gems in Paris to explore" width="440" height="656" / loading="lazy">
The Pont Neuf, Paris

Taking a Seine River cruise is one of the best things to do in Paris. You’ll float past iconic landmarks like the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Musée d’Orsay, and Notre-Dame. The closest departure point to the Eiffel Tower is just a 10–15 minute walk away.

Tip: For a peaceful cruise, opt for a late afternoon ride (around 4 PM), which gives you beautiful golden-hour views without the crowds.

Cost & Time: Cruises range from 10-15€ depending on the company, and most depart near the Louvre, which is a 15-minute walk from the Eiffel Tower.

Day 2

Visit the Home of the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo, and Others

Kick off Day 2 at the Louvre Museum, a must-visit for art lovers. See masterpieces like the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo’s sculptures, and thousands of other incredible works. To avoid crowds, try visiting early in the morning or after 3 PM.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="http://www.mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/thumbnail-9-1.jpeg" alt="solo travel in Paris for 3 days" width="1080" height="514" / loading="lazy">
The Louvre Museum

Tips for Visiting the Louvre:

Best Time to Visit. Go early in the morning or after 3 PM to avoid the busiest crowds.

Skip the Line. Book a skip-the-line guided tour here to save time. Ticket holders have a separate line at the Pyramid entrance.

Free Entry: Children under 18, EU residents under 26, every first Sunday from October to March

Plan Your Route. Check the museum map in advance if you have specific masterpieces to see. Otherwise, you might spend hours wandering.

Alternative Entrances: If the Pyramid line is long, try Palais Royal–Musée du Louvre metro station (Line 1) or 99 Rivoli Street by the Carrousel du Louvre

Don’t Miss the Mona Lisa. Head straight to the Italian Renaissance section first. Spend about 30 minutes there before exploring the rest of the museum.

Relax Nearby. After your visit, unwind at the Palais des Tuileries garden—just a 5-minute walk from the museum.

Visit the Free Public Garden, Palais de Tuileries

After your visit to the Louvre, take a break at the Palais des Tuileries, a peaceful park located between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde (just a 5-minute walk). This lovely spot is ideal for strolling or soaking in the sun.

Visit the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="http://www.mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/thumbnail-24-488x1024.jpeg" alt="how to see Paris in 3 days without a tour guide" width="443" height="930" / loading="lazy">
Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

While the Notre Dame Cathedral was significantly damaged in the 2019 fire, it’s still worth checking out from the outside. I was so lucky that I had a chance to see the world’s most beautiful piece earlier. That is so sad that there is no chance to experience the same anymore, but we keep our hope that one day it will be fully renovated.

Visit Arc de Triomphe

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="http://www.mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/thumbnail-21-1-1018x1024.jpg" alt="how to explore Paris like a local in 3 days" width="440" height="442" / loading="lazy">
Arc de Triomphe

Spend the late afternoon strolling along the Champs-Élysées, one of the world’s most famous shopping streets, and make your way to the Arc de Triomphe at the western end (about a 15-minute walk).

Walking around the arch is free, but if you want to go to the top for fabulous views of Paris, there’s a small fee and about 280 stairs to climb. Adult admission is ~€20, while it’s free for kids under 18. EU citizens or non-European permanent residents of France between 18 and 25 also get free entry.

Find Skip-the-Line Arc de Triomphe Rooftop Tickets here.

Enjoy a Classical Concert at One of the Churches in Paris

I attended a piano concert at a small church, and I have to say, it was the best concert of my life. The venue wasn’t crowded, and I got to sit really close to the pianist, which made the experience even more special. It costs a bit to attend, but it’s absolutely worth it.

If you’re planning your Paris vacation and want to explore beyond the city, don’t miss the chance to check out some of the best day trips from Paris. Planning them ahead will help you make the most of your trip.

Day 3

Spend Quality Time in Montmartre

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/thumbnail-22-488x1024.jpeg" alt="must-see Paris landmarks in 3 days" width="488" height="1024" / loading="lazy">
Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre

Make the most of your Paris visit by exploring Montmartre. Climb up to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica for stunning city views. It takes about 15–20 minutes, so wear comfortable shoes. Don’t miss the lively streets nearby, like Rue des Martyrs, Rue Lamarck, Rue Caulaincourt, and Rue des Abbesses, packed with local shops and cafes. The walk is a bit of a climb, but the views and atmosphere are worth it.

Get your tickets to the Sacré-Coeur and Montmartre Tour with an Expert Guide here.

*Be aware of the street artists who are going to approach you and tell you how beautiful you are, and if you want to get your portrait. Just say NO and move on.

Also, plan your time accordingly, as in Montmartre, you can spend hours.

The most impressive historical monument in Montmartre is the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. The admission is free, and the views are the best.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter" src="http://www.mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/thumbnail-27-488x1024.jpeg" alt="what to do in Paris for 3 days on a budget" width="488" height="1024" / loading="lazy">

Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre

Have Lunch on the Scenic Patio

After your Montmartre exploration, enjoy lunch at one of the district’s many charming cafes. As you may experience grumpy service (it’s part of the Parisian charm), a few polite French words and a smile can go a long way.

Visit the Canal Saint-Martin

After lunch, head to Canal Saint-Martin, a trendy area full of cafes, boutiques, and local charm. Spend some time by the water or take a Seine River & Canal Saint-Martin Cruise from Musée d’Orsay, which is a short walk (about 15 minutes).

Enjoy the best breathtaking views from the Seine River by taking the Seine River & Canal Saint-Martin Cruise from the Louvre.

Walk Cross Pont Alexandre III

End your day with a visit to Pont Alexandre III, one of Paris’s most beautiful bridges. It’s also a great spot for photos of the Eiffel Tower (a 15-minute walk from the bridge).

While most attractions charge admission, many are free to enjoy. For example, you can stroll through the beautiful Tuileries Gardens or explore the charming Montmartre neighborhood without spending a dime. For budget-conscious travelers, it’s easy to explore Paris on foot or by using the Paris Metro (a 1-3 zone Paris Visite Pass is affordable and convenient).

How to Get Around in Paris

The best way to explore Paris is by combining walking, the Metro, or renting a bicycle and taking a Seine River cruise. Walking is great for experiencing the city’s charm up close, while the Metro helps you travel quickly across the city, and a Seine River cruise lets you enjoy Paris from a unique angle.

Transportation Options & Costs

Walking: Free! It’s a great way to explore local neighborhoods and get a feel for Paris. Wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be covering a lot of ground.

Metro: A single ride costs €1.90, but if you plan to use it frequently, consider a Paris Visite Pass for unlimited rides, which costs about €13.20 for 1 day in central zones.

River Cruise: A Seine River cruise usually costs around €15-20 per person. Prices vary depending on the company and whether you want a basic cruise or a more luxurious experience with dinner.

Bicycle: Renting a bike with Vélib’ starts at €1.70 for a 30-minute ride and about €8 for a day pass. Paris has an extensive network of bike lanes, making cycling a convenient and fun way to get around.

These options offer flexibility to suit your budget and time, allowing you to enjoy both the iconic landmarks and hidden gems of Paris.

Paris FAQ

How many days do you need in Paris?

To see the main sights without feeling rushed, 4-5 days is ideal. This gives you enough time to explore iconic landmarks and hidden gems.

Do I need cash in Paris?

Credit cards are widely accepted in Paris, especially in shops and restaurants. However, for street markets, cafés, or smaller purchases, it’s a good idea to carry some cash as cards may not be accepted.

Do they speak English in Paris?

While many Parisians in tourist areas may speak some English, French is the official language, and not everyone speaks English. Learning a few basic French phrases can enhance your experience.

Do I need a car in Paris?

No, Paris is a very walkable city, and most attractions are easily accessible on foot. If you need to travel further, the metro and buses are convenient and affordable.

Final Thoughts

Three days in Paris go by quickly, and having a simple itinerary really helps you see more without the stress. I hope this 3-day Paris itinerary made planning your trip easier.

Paris left a lasting impression on me. From the architecture and small streets to the everyday life and atmosphere. It was my first European city, and I know I’ll be back one day.

If this guide helped you, feel free to share your Paris experience or favorite spots. Happy travels

Planning a trip to Paris, the magical “City of Lights,” is always exciting. Whether you’re visiting famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre, or enjoying delicious local food, there’s so much to see and do.

One of the most important parts of your trip is picking the right place to stay, especially if you’re on a budget. Finding affordable hotels in the city center or close to the Eiffel Tower can make your Paris trip both easy and enjoyable.

In this guide, I’ll show you the best budget-friendly places to stay in Paris, along with some mid-range options that give comfort without breaking the bank. I’ll also share a few helpful tips so your Paris adventure is smooth, fun, and unforgettable.

Budget-Friendly Accommodation

For those of you on a budget, Paris offers a range of affordable accommodation options. If you’re wondering where to stay in Paris, I’ve got several recommendations to help you get started

Have a Social Experience at a Hostel

Hostels are perfect for you if you’re looking for a social atmosphere and cost-effective prices. Websites like Hostelworld can help you find the perfect match based on your preferences and budget. Popular hostels in Paris include Generator Paris, St Christopher’s Inn Canal, and Les Piaules (The People – Paris Belleville). These places offer comfy dorm rooms and communal areas, and often organize activities to help you connect with other guests

Budget-Friendly Hotels

If you prefer more privacy, budget hotels are another viable option. Websites such as Hotels.com offer a wide selection of budget-friendly hotels in Paris. Hotel Ibis Paris Montmartre and Hotel Jules & Jim are just a few examples of charming accommodations. While they may not offer lavish amenities, they provide comfortable rooms, ensuring a pleasant stay without breaking the bank.

Vacation Rentals or VRBO

Renting an apartment or room through platforms like VRBO can be a cost-effective accommodation option in Paris, too. This option is useful, especially if traveling with a group or staying for an extended period. You can find various options, from shared rooms to entire apartments, at different price points. Use the filters on the website to find exactly where to stay in Paris according to your needs.

Suburbs Accommodation

If you’re okay with commuting, consider staying in the suburbs or outside the city center. Prices are usually lower in these areas, and you can easily reach the city center by public transport. You may find staying in the suburbs a great option as long as the area is clean and safe.

Couchsurfing

If you’re open to staying with locals and meeting new people, you can try Couchsurfing. It’s a platform where hosts offer free accommodation to travelers, providing an opportunity for cultural exchange. This could be a great chance to make friends, and your host could even show you around town.

One of these accommodation options in Paris is the Citadines Aparthotel.

Independent Hotels

Paris offers a range of the best places to stay on a budget, including independent hotels with mid-range options. These can range from charming family-run establishments to modern boutique-style accommodations.

|Updated on December 22, 2025|

Paris had been on my list for a long time, and September felt like the perfect time to visit. The only downside was the cost. Accommodation in Paris is expensive.

While researching budget options, I came across Couchsurfing. I’m not promoting it; this is my personal experience. I’d never used it before and was hesitant at first, but after carefully reviewing profiles and references, I decided to give it a try. It ended up being a free place to stay and a chance to see Paris through a local perspective.

Important: Couchsurfing accommodation is always free. You should never pay, and you should always check references and trust your intuition.

Main Benefits of Using Couchsurfing

Free accommodation, which can save a lot in expensive cities like Paris

Local insight you won’t get from hotels or guidebooks

Easy cultural exchange and chances to practice a language

Meaningful connections with people who actually live there

It’s common (but optional) to bring a small souvenir from your country or cook a simple meal as a thank-you.

I chatted with my host before the trip, and he even met me at the metro to walk to his place together. His apartment was tiny (very Parisian), and I slept on an air mattress for three nights, but it was free, and it worked just fine.

Staying with a local gave me a deeper look into everyday Parisian life. How people live, think, and move through the city. I saw both famous sights and quiet, local spots I wouldn’t have found on my own. I believe that mix is what really made me fall in love with Paris.

While Couchsurfing was my choice, it’s not the only way to save on lodging. Here are other reliable alternatives:

HouseCarers: Ideal for long-term stays if you’re willing to pet-sit.

Host a Sister (FB Group): A safe, women-only community for hosting and meeting up.

Travel Ladies App: Specifically built for solo female travelers.

Hostel Work-Trade: Many smaller hostels exchange a bed for a few hours of cleaning or reception work.

5 Free Things to Do in Paris

1. Take a FREE Walking Tour in Paris

This is a great opportunity to get to know about Paris’s history and make friends. With knowledgeable guides and a fantastic route, this tour earns a top-ranking spot for exploring Paris on a budget (you just leave tips). Don’t miss out!

2. Visit Museums in Paris for FREE

If you are interested in art and history, take advantage of the free museum days. Many museums offer free entry on specific days, usually the first Sunday of the month. Check official museum websites in advance to see which ones participate and plan your visit accordingly.

3. Experience the Eiffel Tower’s Magical Night Light Show

See the Eiffel Tower light up the night! Its colorful show is pure magic and a must-see in Paris. Don’t miss the enchantment of this nightly spectacle! It starts in the evening when it is getting dark and ends at 1 am. Each show performs every 5 minutes, and the last one performs for 10 minutes total.

4. Look for FREE Shows, Concerts, and Festivals

Discover the rhythm of Paris for free! Search for exciting, free cultural entertainment in the city of lights and immerse yourself in musical magic. Many of them happen in the summer, but there are some in other seasons, too.

5. Enjoy a FREE View of Paris From the Galleria De Lafayette

With breathtaking panoramic Paris views, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the city’s beauty. Enjoy a serene escape, high above the bustling streets, and savor a café or cocktail. This hidden gem offers a unique perspective of Paris you won’t want to miss. You will need to take the elevator to the very top (7th floor). The terrace opens at 9.30 am and closes at 8 pm.

5 Paris Tips for First-Timers

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="http://www.mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/thumbnail-2.jpeg" alt="free accommodation paris" width="1080" height="514" / loading="lazy">
Seine River in Paris

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="http://www.mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/thumbnail-1-1.jpeg" alt="how to stay in paris for free" width="1080" height="514" / loading="lazy">
the Musée d’Orsa

1. Avoid Eating in Tourist Places

Dining in Paris can be quite pricey. Even a basic meal often starts around €20. A cheaper option is grabbing pre-made food from local shops or bakeries and eating outside. Simple, affordable, and very Parisian. In the summer, you will see a lot of people having a picnic in the parks.

2. Don’t Buy Croissants in Restaurants

If you want the best croissants, skip cafes and restaurants. Head to local bakeries instead. Look for a sign that says ‘artisan boulanger’ to make sure they’re freshly made on-site.

3. Greet French People With ‘Bonjour.’

Always say ‘Bonjour’ when you greet someone. It makes a difference. People might seem a bit rude, but usually, they’re just busy, so don’t take it personally. Also, not everyone speaks English, especially on the subway, so double-check your directions before you get lost. I definitely learned that the hard way!

4. Use the Metro

The Paris Metro is a busy underground network that efficiently connects the city’s many attractions. Paris Metro prices are €2.50 for a one-way ride lasting up to 2 hours. If you plan to go to many places, it’s better to buy 10 ride tickets (carnet), which will cost you a discounted price of €17.35 (2025 update).

Keep your Metro ticket until you leave the station. Ticket inspectors sometimes check tickets at the exit, and fines apply if you can’t show one.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/thumbnail-223x300.jpg" alt="free accommodation in paris" width="325" height="437" / loading="lazy">
the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris

Instead of taking a taxi to the airport, which can cost around €50, consider taking the RER B train. It provides a direct route to Charles de Gaulle Airport for ~€13. For Orly Airport, you can take the RER B to Antony, then transfer to the Orlyval shuttle, which is included in the same €13 fare. If you have a weekly Navigo pass, you can use it to travel on the Orlyval shuttle at no extra cost.

5. Prepare Some Cash

Most places in Paris accept credit cards, but it’s a good idea to carry some cash for small things like tips. Tipping isn’t required, but leaving a few euros is appreciated, so having cash on hand can be useful.

Final Thoughts

Paris is an incredible city. Beautiful, charming, and full of surprises. While it can be expensive, there are plenty of free experiences, and even ways to stay for free if you’re open to trying something different. Couchsurfing worked for me, and while it’s not my usual travel style, I’m glad I gave it a chance.
