Solo Travel in Aruba: 3-Day Itinerary
How to Get Around in Aruba
Knowing how to get around in Aruba is an essential part of any solo travel itinerary. You will find an array of options to navigate the island efficiently and enjoyably. Here’s how you can get around Aruba, for an enriched travel experience.
Rent a Car: Renting a car is arguably the most flexible way to get around Aruba. It provides the freedom to visit Aruba’s stunning beaches like Eagle Beach and Palm Beach at your own pace. With easy-to-navigate roads and the island’s small size, it is easy to drive around Aruba. Plus, it allows you to discover hidden gems beyond the typical tourist spots. Make sure to rent it in advance as it is booked up pretty fast and most likely you won’t be able to rent it on the spot as they won’t have an availability. That’s what I experienced while I was at the Palm Beach Holiday Inn and tried to rent a car from Alamo, but they were completely sold out.
Jeep Tours: For adventurers looking for a way to explore Aruba’s rugged terrain, including Arikok National Park and its rock formations, jeep tours offer an exhilarating experience. These guided tours not only take you to Aruba’s natural pool, but also offer insights into the island’s history. You’ll also be able to have a great time while you immerse yourself in local culture.
Public Transportation: Aruba’s public buses, known as Arubus, provide an economical and reliable way to get around the island. It’s easy to get to major attractions, including shopping districts in Oranjestad and popular beaches. Buses run frequently, making it a convenient option for solo travelers to get around Aruba.
If you want to go to different beaches, I highly suggest skipping the taxis or Uber and using the bus instead. The trip from Palm Beach to Eagle Beach will only cost $2.50 one-way and you will not even have to deal with buying a transit card as you can just pay inside and a driver will also give you a change if you do not have the exact amount. The same route will cost around $9 by taxi.
Taxis: Taxis in Aruba are readily available and offer a convenient way to travel. They are ideal if you’re visiting for a short trip to Aruba and prefer not to drive. They’re a safe option for solo female travelers, particularly for getting back to your place after a day of exploring. Take a taxi from the street and order one at your location.
If you want to take a taxi from the airport to the city or suburbs, just go outside and you will see plenty of them. Ask a few drivers as they will give you slightly different quotes. The first driver I asked told me to pay $35 cash only to get to Nord and the second one, quoted $32.
Also, please note that there are no currency exchange kiosks at the airport, so it is better to have cash handy right away. The good thing is that they take US dollars and you can just ask personnel at any store to give you some money back if you have a big coupure. That’s what I did!
- There is no Uber in Aruba.
Bicycle and Scooter Rentals
If you prefer an active way to get around Aruba, renting a bicycle or scooter can be a delightful option. It allows you to enjoy the island’s beauty up close, from its white sand beaches to its vibrant locales. This mode is perfect for accessing smaller beaches and local areas.
Walking: In areas like Oranjestad, walking is a pleasure. The capital city is compact and full of color, culture, and history. It is ideal for solo travelers who want to take in the sights at a leisurely pace. Walking tours can help you delve deeper into Aruba’s heritage and culinary scene.
Catamaran and Sailing Tours
To explore Aruba’s crystal-clear Caribbean waters, consider booking a catamaran or sailing tour. These tours offer unique perspectives of Aruba’s coastline, including snorkeling stops at sites like the Antilla shipwreck and Boca Catalina.

Best Aruba Tips
Aruba Safety Tips
Stay Informed About Local Areas: While Aruba is one of the safest Caribbean islands, it’s still wise to stay informed about which areas are best avoided, especially at night. Stick to well-lit, populated areas when exploring alone.
Protect Your Belongings: Use common sense to protect your valuables and have an Aruba-safe trip. Utilize hotel safes and avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics conspicuously.
Stay Hydrated and Sun-Protected: The Aruban sun can be intense. Always carry water, use sunscreen liberally, and wear a hat and sunglasses to protect against heatstroke and sunburn.
Useful Tips
Local Currency: The Aruban Florin (AWG) is the local currency, but US dollars are widely accepted. It’s helpful to have some local currency for small purchases where credit cards might not be accepted.
Transportation: Renting a car can be cost-effective for exploring the island, especially for reaching more secluded spots. However, Aruba’s public transportation system is reliable and can be a great way to get around as well.
Connectivity: Purchasing a local SIM card or ensuring you have an international plan can keep you connected during your travels. Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels, restaurants, and public areas. You should have no problem keeping in touch with your friends and family during your solo travel in Aruba’s 3-day itinerary.
Language and Culture: English is widely spoken, alongside Dutch, Spanish, and Papiamento, the local language. A few basic phrases in Papiamento can endear you to locals.
Water Safety: The tap water in Aruba is safe to drink, coming directly from a modern desalination plant. This not only saves money on bottled water but is also environmentally friendly as you can drink the water with no concerns.
Money-Saving Tips
Accommodation: Consider staying in apartments, hostels, or Airbnb rentals for more affordable options compared to hotels. Booking well in advance can also secure better rates.
Dining: Eat where the locals eat. Local eateries, often away from the main tourist areas, offer delicious and authentic meals at a fraction of the cost of tourist-centric restaurants. Also, consider visiting supermarkets for snacks and simple meals.
Activities: Many of Aruba’s natural attractions, like its beaches and national parks, are free or have a minimal entry fee. Look out for free walking tours in Oranjestad to learn about the island’s history and culture.
Transportation: Using public transportation or renting a bike can be much cheaper than relying on taxis for every trip. If renting a car, compare prices and consider booking in advance for the best deals. Doing so can save you a lot of time and money during your solo travel in Aruba’s 3-day itinerary.
