Planning a budget trip to Dubai is easier than you think. The city is modern, offers stunning architecture, luxury shopping, and plenty of activities for solo travelers. From a desert safari and breathtaking views from the Burj Khalifa to visiting the iconic Burj Al Arab, there’s something for everyone.

The best part? Dubai doesn’t have to be expensive. Flights from Europe or nearby countries can sometimes be found for under $100 round-trip, making it an amazing destination for budget travelers.

Is it possible to visit Dubai on a budget from the USA? Absolutely.

Flights from the USA can be surprisingly affordable. For example, I once found a round-trip ticket for $500 with a layover in Amman. 16 hours of travel, but still a great deal.

Dress code –Regular clothes like shorts, skirts, and tops are fine. Avoid very revealing outfits in public to respect local customs.

Get a free SIM card at Passport Control – no SIM PIN included; set it up at a mobile store or bring one from home. * It gives you 1 GB for 24 hours.

Wi-Fi calls require a VPN – most apps (WhatsApp, FaceTime) are blocked without one

Cards accepted almost everywhere – cash rarely needed, but keep some for emergencies/small vendors

Safety – Dubai is extremely safe day and night; one of the lowest crime rates in the world

This activity is a must-do. It is affordable and fun. I’ve booked my tour with the GetYourGuide agency (as I always do), and the tour was very nice. This tour included three activities: a camel ride, a sandboard ride, and a crazy dunes ride in a vehicle. I did this on my birthday, and I had so much fun. Highly recommend.

Dubai Mall

If you have been to the major cities and visited malls there, you won’t be so excited about the Dubai Mall. It’s huge, has lots of shops, and the Burj Khalifa is located right there as well. So you can combine your activities at the same time. The only thing I hated about the Dubai Mall is that they sell perfume on every single corner, which is super strong. So if you are allergic to this kind of stuff, be aware.

The entrance to the Burj Khalifa’s top is inside the Dubai Mall on the G level. Tickets should be booked in advance for a specific time. You can buy them on the spot, but expect long lines and limited availability, especially during peak hours.

Watch the Night Fountain Show

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-8505" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/thumbnail-23-768x1024-1-300x286.jpg" alt="Free things to do in Dubai for tourists" width="786" height="750" / loading="lazy" srcset="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/thumbnail-23-768x1024-1-300x286.jpg 300w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/thumbnail-23-768x1024-1.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 786px) 100vw, 786px" />

The Dubai Fountain show is worth seeing while near the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall. It’s shorter than some other famous shows, but the music, lights, and dancing water make it enjoyable. Shows run every 30 minutes after sunset, and best of all. It’s free!

This 90-minute boat tour is a fun way to see Dubai from the water. You’ll pass landmarks like the Burj Khalifa, Atlantis Hotel, and JBR Beach, with plenty of stops for photos.

Tip: Bring a hairbrush. You’ll need it after the wind on the water!

I didn’t get a chance to go, but it looks super fun. Full of optical illusions and colorful scenes, it’s perfect for taking creative selfies. You can walk into fantasy worlds and pose with 3D art. It’s a playful way to enjoy your Dubai trip.

What to Do Before Going to Dubai

Check Visa Requirements

Before traveling to Dubai, make sure you know whether you need a visa. Many nationalities are eligible for a 30-day visa on arrival, but it’s important to verify the specific requirements based on your passport and nationality. You can check official government sources or travel agencies for the most up-to-date information.

Get Travel Health Insurance

It’s always a good idea to get travel health insurance to cover unexpected medical expenses while you’re abroad. Dubai has high-quality healthcare, but medical treatment can be expensive for visitors. Look for a policy that also covers trip cancellations, lost luggage, and emergency evacuation for added peace of mind. I always buy my insurance on Insubuy, where they have various partners and options.

Pack the Power Adapter Type G

Dubai uses the Type G power plug, which has three rectangular pins arranged in a triangular pattern. Be sure to bring a universal power adapter, so you can charge your electronics. If you’re staying in a hotel, most will provide adapters, but it’s better to have your own just in case.

Download Your Entertainment in Advance

In case the in-flight movie selection doesn’t meet your expectations, download your favorite shows, movies, or e-books ahead of time. Long flights can be tiring, and having something to entertain you will make the journey more enjoyable.

Research Cultural Etiquette

Dubai is a cosmopolitan city, but it’s also a Muslim country. It’s important to be respectful of local customs and traditions. Dress modestly, particularly in public places like malls or religious sites. Also, avoid public displays of affection and be mindful of the country’s strict laws regarding alcohol consumption, public behavior, and social media.

Pack a Reusable Water Bottle

Dubai is hot, especially in summer, and staying hydrated is crucial. Bring a reusable water bottle that you can refill throughout the day. Tap water is safe to drink in Dubai, but bottled water is also widely available if you prefer.

The easiest way to get around Dubai is by Metro. It’s clean, reliable, and trains come every five minutes, so you rarely have to wait long. To ride, you’ll need an NOL card:

Red Ticket: Good for single trips.

Silver Card: Best if you plan to use public transport a lot. It works on metros, trams, and buses and can be recharged as needed.

Fares depend on how many zones you travel through, and don’t forget to tap your card both when entering and exiting. If you’re staying longer, a 7-day pass gives you unlimited rides across all RTA transport.

Buses are also a budget-friendly option. You might wait 20–30 minutes sometimes, but they’re reliable and cover areas the Metro doesn’t. Scooters and bikes are available in tourist areas, though not everywhere, so plan accordingly.

For taxis, Uber and Careem are the easiest ways to get around. A tip: set up your payment method before you arrive, because some cards, like American ones, don’t always work once you’re in Dubai.

With a little planning, getting around Dubai is simple and stress-free, and you’ll have plenty of options to explore the city your way.

Choose accommodation with a kitchen. This lets you cook your own meals instead of eating out all the time. It’s a big money-saver, especially for longer stays.

Stay in hostels or budget hotels. Dubai has plenty of affordable places to stay if you plan ahead.

Eat smart. When you’re out, grab meals at mall food courts instead of cafés or sit-down restaurants. It’s cheaper and often just as tasty.

Use deals and discounts. Check Groupon (use a VPN for better local pricing) or the Entertainer app/magazine for buy-one-get-one-free offers on restaurants, attractions, and activities. The app is paid, but they sometimes offer a free trial.

Public transport over taxis. Use the Metro, buses, or even shared water taxis instead of taxis for daily travel. It’s much cheaper.

Avoid high-season dates. Traveling off-season or midweek can save you money on flights, accommodation, and tours.

Dubai FAQ

Do I need a visa to visit Dubai?

Yes, depending on your nationality, you may need a visa. Many travelers from Europe, the US, and some other countries can get a visa on arrival, but it’s always best to check in advance.

What is the best time to visit Dubai?

The ideal time is between November and March, when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for sightseeing. Avoid visiting in the summer unless you plan mostly indoor activities, as temperatures can soar above 40°C (104°F).

What should I wear in Dubai?

You can wear casual clothes like shorts, skirts, and tops, but it’s important to be respectful of local customs. Avoid overly revealing outfits, especially in public places or religious sites.

Is Dubai safe for tourists?

Yes, Dubai is very safe for tourists, both during the day and at night. Petty crime is rare, and the city is well-policed. Just use common sense, especially when visiting crowded areas.

Can I use public transportation in Dubai?

Absolutely. The Dubai Metro is clean, reliable, and easy to use. Buses, trams, and water taxis are also available. For convenience, consider getting an NOL card for seamless travel across all public transport modes.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, Dubai was never on my bucket list, but I spontaneously decided to celebrate my birthday there solo, and I’m so glad I did. I ended up really enjoying the city. There’s so much to see and do, and it’s a very safe place to explore on your own.
