How to Spend 48 Hours in New York: Complete Travel Guide
Getting Around NYC
First and foremost, efficient navigation is crucial in any city, especially in New York.
Navigating New York is a breeze due to its extensive transportation options. The most popular choice is the subway (metro). I highly recommend using it even when traveling from the airport to save money, as Uber can be quite expensive.
To catch the metro from the airport, start by using the Airport shuttle for 2 stops, and then transfer to the Metro line at Randolph metro station. To pay for the Metro, you’ll need to purchase a Metro card, load it with the desired amount, and print the receipt to use the shuttle bus. You can print the receipt by inserting your Metro card into the validation machine, located outside near the shuttle bus stop. A one-way trip costs $2.75.
Tip: Although it’s not recommended, nobody usually checks those receipts, so you can ride the shuttle bus without one.
Similar to other major cities, other popular transportation options include:
- Taxis – The initial charge is $2.50, with additional charges for slow driving in traffic ($0.50 per 1/5 mile), a $0.50 MTA State Surcharge, a $0.50 overnight surcharge (8 pm – 6 am), and other extra fees. Taxis can get expensive, so if time is not an issue, I would suggest avoiding them. More pricing details can be found here.
- Uber and Lyft – The price will depend on your starting and ending locations.
- Bicycle rental – Classic bike rentals cost $3.99 for a single trip of up to 30 minutes.
- Scooter rental – Prices are $0.20 per minute, $12 per hour, and $45 per day. Additional information can be found here.
For first-time visitors, I recommend sticking to the subway. It’s the fastest and most affordable way to see all the best attractions in NYC.
Keep in mind that the New York subway system is not the cleanest or most pleasant, but it gets the job done. Additionally, certain subway lines may have different routes at specific times of the day, so pay attention to the schedules to avoid missing your desired destination.
If you prefer to visit multiple places in one day while sticking to the same mode of transportation, consider taking a hop-on hop-off bus tour in NYC. It’s a fun way to explore the city, especially in good weather when you can enjoy beautiful views, sunlight, and a gentle breeze from the top of the bus.
