San José is often the first stop for travelers entering Costa Rica, and for good reason. The capital is close to the main international airport, well-connected by buses, and a convenient base for day trips to volcanoes, waterfalls, and cultural highlights.

If you’re planning your trip and wondering what to do in San José, Costa Rica, this guide covers everything: top attractions, where to stay, how to get around, safety tips, and how to travel from San José to La Fortuna.

Why Visit San José?

San José isn’t just a stopover. It’s a good introduction to Costa Rican culture. You’ll find museums, local food markets, colorful neighborhoods, historic buildings, and easy public transportation.

It’s also one of the best bases for exploring Central Costa Rica:

⭐ Before You Go: Important Things to Know ⭐

Avoid downtown & Coca-Cola terminal area at night – stay in Escazú, Sabana, or Barrio Amón instead.

Never use your phone on the street – pickpockets are fast.

After dark, always take Uber (safer & cheaper than taxis).

Use only bank/hotel ATMs – street ones skim cards.

Carry small colones bills – many places are cash-only.

Best Things to Do in San José (City&Nearby)

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-8536" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/21-1024x1024-1-300x300.jpg" alt="San Jose Costa Rica travel" width="786" height="786" / loading="lazy" srcset="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/21-1024x1024-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/21-1024x1024-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/21-1024x1024-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/21-1024x1024-1-45x45.jpg 45w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/21-1024x1024-1.jpg 1024w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 786px) 100vw, 786px" />

Many of the best things to do near San José involve volcanoes, food tours, and nature experiences. So why not start your Costa Rica vacation with a bit of adventure instead?

1. Explore the City on a Cultural Tour

If you want an easy introduction to San José, join a walking or cultural tour. You’ll see Plaza de la Cultura, the National Theater, local markets, and hidden corners you might miss on your own.

2. Book ATV Adventure & Crocodile Watch (My Experience)

With so many options and things to see in San Jose and nearby, you might want to book a tour to get the most out of your days in the city. I planned on checking out a few times while there, but ended up opting for one tour that took us ATV riding. I think that is one of the best adventure tours near San Jose, Costa Rica.

Book your ATV Adventure and Crocodiles tour here.

I’ll admit it was a bit scary at first, having never ridden an ATV before this, but after the initial nervousness, I got more comfortable driving and even could add quite a bit of speed. This tour was a bit pricey ($145 at the time), especially given that it didn’t include lunch (only water and a variety of fruits), but it felt like a truly unique experience and was worth the price. And at the end of the tour, we spotted some crocodiles from the bridge!

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-8537" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/0987-1024x869-1-300x255.jpg" alt="San Jose Costa Rica attractions" width="786" height="667" / loading="lazy" srcset="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/0987-1024x869-1-300x255.jpg 300w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/0987-1024x869-1-768x652.jpg 768w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/0987-1024x869-1.jpg 1024w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 786px) 100vw, 786px" />

3. Explore Arenal Volcano

If you are an adventure seeker looking for more of a nature-forward stop, you can head just 14 miles outside of the city to Arenal Volcano. Although deemed to be resting since 2010, Arenal was once the country’s most active volcano. Nowadays, you can safely tour the volcano that stands 5,437 feet tall. Most travelers travel via a local bus to the volcano, which departs from the city center.

4. Visit the Teatro Nacional Costa Rica Museum

Are you looking to spend more time in the city of San Jose? Then, you can head to the Teatro Nacional Costa Rica to tour this unique museum focused on the architectural and artistic history of the country. A favorite with those wanting to dive more into the city’s culture. This is always a top spot for tourists and locals alike!

5. Explore Irzu Volcano

If you’re into nature, plan a day trip from San José, Costa Rica, to Irazú Volcano, the highest active volcano in Costa Rica. You can also visit the La Paz Waterfall Gardens Tour, which combines waterfalls, wildlife, and lush rainforest landscapes.

6. Go Shopping in San Jose

If you love shopping, the Multiplaza Escazú is one of the top San José, Costa Rica attractions for modern retail. There, you will find various fashion and clothing stores and many other retailers. While there, I was happy to see some of the European stores I know and love, such as Bershka, Pull&Bear, Stradivarius, and a handful of others. For handmade souvenirs, head to Mercado Central San José or the artisan stalls near Plaza de la Cultura.

7. Enjoy the Nightlife

For a fun night out, enjoy the San José, Costa Rica nightlife. From cozy rooftop bars to salsa clubs. It’s one of the best ways to experience local culture.

If you’re on a budget, there are also plenty of free things to do in San José, Costa Rica, like strolling through La Sabana Metropolitan Park, visiting Plaza de la Cultura, or admiring the city’s street art.

Getting around is relatively easy, thanks to the country’s excellent transportation network in San José, Costa Rica.

Uber

Taxi

Public buses

Rental cars. *Only rent a car if you plan day trips from San José to places like La Paz Waterfall Gardens Tour or Irazú Volcano from San José

Most routes take you near popular stops like the Plaza de la Cultura San José and Mercado Central San José, both major landmarks worth visiting.

To note, there are local buses you can take from San Jose to La Fortuna (as I also mentioned further), and there are even some that can take you to the nearby Arenal Volcano. You can also hire a private shuttle if you wish, but this comes with a heftier price tag (starting from $54).

Where to Stay in San Jose, Costa Rica

San José has options for every budget. Here’s my personal experience.

I initially checked into Capital Hostel de Ciudad after reading great reviews, but it didn’t live up to expectations. I booked a private room with a shared bathroom, and unfortunately, the shared space caused a lot of noise and interruptions at night. The neighborhood was quiet but lacked food options late in the evening.

I switched to a hotel the next day and recommend choosing a hotel over this hostel if you want comfort.

If you prefer staying near green spaces, hotels around La Sabana Metropolitan Park are excellent. The park is perfect for morning walks and fresh air.

Another area to be extra careful around is Parque Central, as the area just south of the park is a red-light district famous for illicit drug use and sex workers.
How to Get to La Fortuna from San Jose

You can go to the bus station in La Fortuna and catch a bus to San José, but the schedule changes often and isn’t always updated online. For example, I planned to take the direct 12:45 pm bus to San José, but when I arrived, I found out it wasn’t running that day. Instead, I took a bus to the San Carlos terminal and then connected to another bus to San José. The whole trip took about four hours in total.

The nice thing about the bus going directly through the city of San Jose is the ability to hop off anywhere, which makes getting around very easy. For example, I was heading to a local hospital, La Biblica, to take a COVID test, and since it was very close to one of the bus stops, I could hop off and take an Uber the rest of the way.

Craving adventure? How about a horseback riding tour in La Fortuna? I’ve never ridden a horse before, and decided La Fortuna was the best place to give it a try. I wasn’t disappointed at all since some people didn’t show up for the tour, and I ended up having a private tour. I was scared at first, but after a while, I got used to my horse and enjoyed the ride very much.

Horseback tours are available through Arenal Volcano National Park, and they often include views of waterfalls or hidden trails. Definitely one of the best things to do in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, if you are an adventure seeker.

El Salto Rope Swing in La Fortuna

Exploring El Salto is one of the best-known free things to do in La Fortuna, Costa Rica. It is a free swimming hole near La Fortuna that you can easily reach on foot in just 15-20 minutes.

While the spot is nice, there isn’t anything particularly special about it. It seems dangerous as it is full of rocks, and there is no actual walking path. If you’re traveling solo, I wouldn’t recommend going there alone.

When I checked it out in the middle of the day, the area was mostly occupied by groups of guys either smoking or just hanging out, which made me feel uncomfortable. I took a quick photo, grabbed an Uber, and left.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-3428" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/18-1024x760.jpg" alt="How to get to La Fortuna from San Jose airport" width="787" height="584" / loading="lazy" srcset="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/18-1024x760.jpg 1024w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/18-300x223.jpg 300w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/18-768x570.jpg 768w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/18.jpg 1046w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 787px) 100vw, 787px" />

How to Get From San Jose Airport to La Fortuna

If you arrive early in the morning, I highly recommend the affordable bus from San José to La Fortuna. Costing only ~$5-$7, the trip usually takes between 3 and 5 hours. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to take the San José to La Fortuna bus as I arrived in the afternoon. Instead, I took an Uber from San José Airport to the San Carlos bus terminal ($43) and then a bus to La Fortuna from the San Carlos terminal ($3).

Direct buses from San José to La Fortuna leave at 6:15 am, 8:40 am, and 11:30 am from Ave 7-9, Calle 12, and the trip takes about 4 hours.

Note that Uber is technically illegal in Costa Rica, so drivers cannot pick you up directly from the airport. To get an Uber, you’ll need to go inside the airport, turn left from the entrance, cross the street, and walk around the corner. You’ll end up on the main road, where you’ll find a bus stop just after the corner.

So Uber will be picking you up nearby. Also, you can’t sit in the back because Uber is illegal.

On the way to La Fortuna from San Jose Airport, we passed by the Zarcero. So if you plan to visit it, there might be no need anymore if you take the same route. I just asked the driver to stop for a few minutes so that I could take pictures.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3397" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/zarcero-1024x921.jpg" alt="Top activities to do in La Fortuna Costa Rica" width="786" height="707" / loading="lazy" srcset="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/zarcero-1024x921.jpg 1024w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/zarcero-300x270.jpg 300w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/zarcero-768x691.jpg 768w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/zarcero.jpg 1074w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 786px) 100vw, 786px" />
Zarcero

The trip from the airport to San Carlos will take about 2 to 2.5 hours and cost around $43. Once you arrive at the bus station, look for the bus to La Fortuna and pay the driver directly. It cost me only $3, and I reached downtown La Fortuna in about an hour.

There are also other options for getting to La Fortuna.

Private or shared shuttle. Prices start at $50. Shared shuttle services are available with Interbus, Easy Ride, Caribe Shuttle, and Ride CR.

Rent a car. Prices vary, but you can find rentals starting from around $30 per day.

Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore day trips from La Fortuna, like the hot springs or waterfalls near La Fortuna, Costa Rica.

Getting around is very easy. The La Fortuna downtown is small enough that you can walk there. For destinations outside of downtown, such as the Arenal Volcano, hot springs, or the Mistico Hanging Bridges, renting a car is the most flexible and efficient option.

The bus station is also in the city, so if you need to use a public bus from La Fortuna to San Jose, that is your best choice. This is a budget-friendly option, but schedules can be limited. Plan ahead. Taxis in La Fortuna and rideshare services are also available for shorter trips, and many La Fortuna tours offer transportation as part of their packages.

As La Fortuna accommodation options are centrally located, most places are near each other in the heart of the town. I’ve personally stayed at Secreto La Fortuna, and I must admit that the hotel was perfect.

It’s located just outside the center (a short walk through the streets), but it offers a fantastic view of the Arenal Volcano. Every morning, I woke up to a beautiful sight. What more could you ask for before enjoying a delicious breakfast?

Speaking of breakfast, I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Usually, complimentary breakfasts are quite plain, but here, the plate was full of food, and they even offered some local fruits for dessert.

Overall, everything from the location in La Fortuna, the room, and the customer service was excellent. I highly recommend checking out Secreto La Fortuna the next time you’re visiting Costa Rica.

Where to Eat in La Fortuna

There are around 100 places to eat in La Fortuna, but many are geared toward tourists, which can affect the quality and pricing.

I tried Soda Viquez and had a very plain avocado salad, which wasn’t that great. I didn’t try anything else, so I can’t speak for the rest of the menu. However, the place is small and clean, the owner is friendly, and the prices are very affordable. If you’re not too picky, it might be worth a try; perhaps other dishes are better.

I also had sushi at Kappa Sushi, where everything was good. I ordered the Volcano Roll, and while the food was enjoyable, it was pricey.

Best Tips for Exploring La Fortuna

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-10034" src="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/5-1024x1024-1-300x300.jpeg" alt="la fortuna tips" width="786" height="786" / loading="lazy" srcset="https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/5-1024x1024-1-300x300.jpeg 300w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/5-1024x1024-1-150x150.jpeg 150w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/5-1024x1024-1-768x768.jpeg 768w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/5-1024x1024-1-45x45.jpeg 45w, https://mywandermoments.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/5-1024x1024-1.jpeg 1024w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 786px) 100vw, 786px" />

Carry Cash (Colones). Many small attractions, trails, and local sodas accept cash only. ATMs are available in town, but fees can vary.

Save on Transportation in La Fortuna. Public transportation isn’t available everywhere, but when it is, it’s very affordable, typically $5 to $7. While Uber can be a cost-effective option within the city, it can get pricey for longer distances. Avoid taxis if you can, as they tend to be even more expensive.

Save Money on a Water Bottle and Stay Hydrated. Locals say that the tap water is safe to drink. I haven’t tried it myself, but it seems to be true based on their advice. If you want to reduce waste and save money, refill your reusable water bottle with tap water instead of purchasing bottled water.

Learn Basic Spanish. In La Fortuna, knowing a few basic Spanish phrases can make a world of difference. While some locals speak English, it’s not common, especially outside of tourist hotspots. Being able to ask for directions, order food, or greet someone in Spanish will make your trip more enjoyable and help you connect better with the local culture.

Download Offline Maps. Cell service drops near waterfalls, trails, and national parks.
